Different Ways Of Testing Abrasion Resistant Coating

By Patrice McCoy

To protect surfaces of products, improve how it looks or keep it from being affected by scratches or corrosion coatings are used. Abrasion resistant coating is the ones that are capable of preventing wearing of material. When a coating contains graze resistance substance, it is capable of preventing material from eroding that occurs when the material is rubbed, scrapped, grounded, damaged or mechanical wear.

Different types of coatings are manufactured to make sure that that surfaces or material are not damaged by scraping. The ability of Teflon being tolerant to sticking, dry lubrication and cannot be damaged by high temperatures and wear makes material highly resistant to scratching and highly reduces friction caused by rubbing of a material or surfaces. Ceramic coatings are frequently used on material to prevent scuffing depending on the amount friction it's subjected to. It is resistant to scratching and high temperature.

There are different ways of testing how tolerant coatings are from scuffing. Resistance to rubbing scuffing surfaces on material and can be gauged using the Taber Abrader method. Different pressure level is exerted on two surfaces to check the wearing action. The end result on both surfaces is gauged by the amount of weight loss caused by abrasion and changes in appearance on the surfaces.

The Crock meter and the Sutra rub tester are machines used to measure the effect of graze tolerance caused by rubbing of the surface or material. This occurs when substance color or material moves from one surface to another when rubbing is done.

It is mainly used on printed films to gauge the rub, or scratch, resistance of ink in sweaty, dry or wet circumstances. The Crock meter is made up of a head, which navigates, and presses the circular felt pad on the material. This can also be done using the sutra rub test.

When two different surfaces are rubbed against each other under the same speed, pressure and plane, different levels of rub/abrasion resistance are observed. This is measured by the amount of color transferred from one surface to another when rubbing is done. The machine used to test this is known as SmithePira rub tester.

The Garvati CAT also known as Garvati comprehensive graze test is a method that was originally used to measure the graze resistance on beverage cans that are made of aluminum. The machine is used to cause a vibration that normally occurs when either the cans or printed book covers are being transported from one place to another using a truck or train. During this experiment the printed cans or book covers are put next to the ones that are plain. It is seen that when the machine exhibits the transit vibrations there is transfer of color substances and materials from the printed surfaces to the ones that are not printed.

It is important to know that when a material or surface has properties that make is scrape resistance is not one hundred percent that it's proof to scraping. Break down of material and change in shape is inevitable due to mechanical and natural wearing. Getting products to be scrape resistant or buying abrasion resistant coating is expensive. It is therefore necessary to measure the cost of buying abrasion resistant coating and getting new material or product.
