3 Steps To Going Viral

By Monica Martinez

Virus - What immediately enters your mind? Do you think if being sick, having some disease or illness? Or, more predictably if you are an internet marketer, do you think of content that is talked about, popular and attention grabbing? Viral content is content that gets talked about and passed around without any help from the creator. And what's great is that the person who created it doesn't have to do anything else with it. It is the internet equivalent to getting "good word of mouth" advertising. Ask any online marketer, they'll tell you they would love to have something like that happen to them. This type of traffic volume will give most marketers severe bandwidth overage charges. Here are some things you can do to increase the likelihood that your work will go viral and you will get the attention you crave.

Strive to be different, maybe even unpredictable in your business. If you are known for focusing on one single topic, create a new product or service in a new niche. Don't be scared, or shy, to let something else from you shine through for all to see. You can certainly keep people curious about what will come next from you this way. If you become too predictable you run the risk of being taken for granted. This can shrink your bottom line very quickly. When you catch people off-guard, or surprise them with something really unique, then your odds of becoming viral increase. So when you're being discussed and your content is passed around, then obviously those are components of being viral.

One approach is to locate someone who's extremely popular, then directly link yourself to that person. Another strategy is to create a video review or commentary on a popular person in your market. If that person likes what you've done, plus the publicity from it, you could get a link to your content. This sends that person's audience to you and you have a whole bunch of new eyes on your work. So then if your creation is compelling enough, this could cause some viral sharing to happen. And that's how you would achieve what's called, "going viral."

Make product that you can give away for free and let people share it with others. Interest potential subscribers by creating a free newsletter that has a "share with a friend" button at the end of it. Allow your greatest content to be on your blog's first page for no charge at all. Give a coupon for a free product or a free hour of your shop's service. If you allow people to print more than one coupon that they can share with their friends, this strategy will surely get more attention and get new customers.

In a lot of ways the compelling factor with viral content is not so much the content, but the ability to grab someone's attention and make them want to know more. Naturally, not all great content will have that kind of effect on people and be viral. As well know, we can't predict when something goes viral, but if you put these ideas into practice you just may be pleasantly surprised.
