What Expenses Will I Pay When Owning VGPMX?

By Ana Bradley

If you plan to invest in VGPMX, it's important that you know about the fees involved in buying shares. There are fees associated with all mutual funds, so this is not unusual. It does tend to surprise many people, though, so don't be caught off guard by not learning about these fees until you are ready to buy. This article will cover the average costs for all mutual funds as well as the costs specific to VGPMX.

The first fee is the annual report expense ratio fee. Every mutual fund charges this fee. The good thing about Vanguard Precious Metal Mutual Fund, though, is that you will actually pay a much lower percentage than the average. VGPMX charges 0.29% while the overall average is 1.40%.

We do not have an overall average for all companies for the next expense, the prospectus net expense ratio, but we do know that Vanguard Precious Metals Mutual Fund only charges a rate of 0.29% and that they tend to be lower than the average. We have no reason to think that would not be true of the prospectus net expense ration also.

The third expense that I wanted to mention is basically an overall projection of what you will spend if you had the mutual fund for three years, five years, and 10 years. Based on every $10,000 invested, your three year expense would be $93. The national average is $625. Your five year expense would be $163, and the national average is $972. And the 10 year expense would be $368, as opposed to a national average of $1918.

So these are the fees and expenses you need to be aware of when you invest in VGPMX. This fund really isn't that expensive, and it has the ability to make you a really good return so I definitely recommend you do so.
