Great Marathons For Runners Who Want Great Scenery

By Kamryn Mattson

Runners love to challenge themselves with a good marathon and if you have already tackled the big ones in Boston or New York, it might be time to consider an alternate venue. Consider planning a marathon run in a location that promises the best scenery our nation has to offer. Here are a few beautiful examples.

The Big Sur International Marathon, which takes place in late April, offers an amazing look at California's stunning coastal scenery. Your views will include the rocky Pacific coastline, old growth forests and even rolling hills and meadows. Live music is played along the course, and of course, water and medical care stations are found throughout the event.

For a Midwestern treat, consider running the Twin Cities Marathon, which is held the first weekend in October. Not only are the fall colors at their best, the route runs past some great local neighborhoods, past the lake and even along the Mississippi River. There are tons of fun family activities, so you can bring everyone along. Live bands also play all along the course.

If you have always wanted to try a mountain marathon, but are worried about the extra strain of the altitude, consider the Steamboat Marathon, held annually in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The race is held at high altitudes, but at least you start at the highest point and make your way down the mountain route to the town itself, at an elevation of 6,728 feet.

If you find that muscle soreness is plaguing you and you are worried about the pain affecting your ability to run, consider using a kinetic performance system. Unlike braces or tapes that limit mobility, these systems are flexible and move easily with the body. Created using the principles of kinesiology and physiology, the systems protect the sore muscle and borrow strength and stability from underlying muscles.

You can purchase kinetic performance systems for the knees, elbows, shoulders and the back, all areas which often encounter muscle soreness. The systems go one step further, in fact, and there are systems specifically for the outer elbow, inner elbow, lower back and upper back, as well as two types of knee systems. They are easy to apply and will stay firmly in place, using a hypoallergenic adhesive, so you won't have to worry about the system coming loose during your marathon.
