Ways To Take Gymnastics Classes

By Lenore Lickteig

With the numbers of gymnastics events shown on television, many kids become interested in taking up the sport each year. Delaware gymnastics classes are available at Newport gymnastics schools as well as throughout the state. Most focus their attention on artistic gymnastics, which includes apparatus such as the parallel bars, vault, balance beam, pommel horse, and the floor exercise. Even so, there are several options available for those who want to take up the sport for fun or possibly compete among the elite of the sport.

Students learn introductory tumbling skills and are able to become acclimated to the various apparatus in recreational classes. Because of the low level of instruction offered, several organizations offer recreational classes including schools, private gyms, churches and recreation centers. Students can also compete at this level for medals.

If students have shown potential in recreational classes, they may be extended an invitation to join a competitive team. Being a part of a competitive team may mean joining a private gym and committing a great deal of time and money to the sport. At this level, students learn more difficult moves on each of the apparatus and work with coaches to develop routines for completion. The best gymnasts have the opportunity to compete on the national and world stage.

Focus on tumbling. For kids that only want to learn how to tumble, many private gyms offer tumbling classes. Students begin learning basic moves and then advance to completing more difficult tumbling passes. There are several tumbling competitions for gymnasts to compete in.

Adults have an opportunity to participate in gymnastics as well. Whether a seasoned gymnast or a novice, adults can find classes specifically tailored for them at many gyms. The only difference from programs for kids is that certain skills may not be taught. Adults can train to compete in several completions.

Consider rhythmic classes. Unlike artistic gymnasts that utilize power, rhythmic gymnasts focus on flexibility and grace. They perform ballet-like moves while working with hand-held apparatus such as a ribbon, ball or hoop. Rhythmic gymnasts perform both individual and group routines. Rhythmic classes may not be as readily available as artistic or tumbling courses, so use a variety of resources to find a class.

Try cheerleading. Many Delaware cheerleading teams incorporate tumbling and stunts into their routines. With competitive fierce for a spot on high school cheerleading squads, many gyms have developed cheerleading programs. These programs teach the tumbling skills that most cheerleaders will needs. They may also work on stunting, dance and cheering. A few Delaware gymnastics schools sponsor competitive all-star cheerleader squads. Further, there are also gyms solely dedicated to cheerleading.
