Karan Johar's Siddharth Malhotra-starrer Student of the Year does well with distributors
Karan Johar's upcoming film Student of the Year is being tagged as the launch pad for its host of leading newcomers, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. Unlike his previous directorial ventures, all of which have starred Shah Rukh Khan and the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan, this will be the director-producer's first film with newcomers in the lead. Quoting Karan Johar, "I feel like it's my debut film. Honestly, a lot of work and energy has gone into making SOTY. And more than the film's box-office performance, I hope that the careers I am launching of Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt take off."
The trio of newcomers has worked hard for the film. Unlike his co-stars, Siddharth Malhotra doesn't hail from a filmy background and found acting a difficult trade to master. Beating all odds, Siddharth along with Varun and Alia have projected exceptional performances for the upcoming film. "Sometimes, I'm a bit nervous. But at most times, I'm confident. I have landed a dream debut. Karan, according to me, has the safest pair of hands in the film business," says Siddharth. Director-mentor Karan Johar has been showering the three with praises stating, "I feel I am in a new phase of production which is great for Dharma Productions. We are doing great collaborations and I am directing fantastic newcomers in the film. So I am charged about it."
This simply goes to prove just how well the film could do once released. And the novelty of this Karan Johar directorial venture isn't all that's driving the masses in. the film's soundtrack has received a tremendous response and has set feet tapping across webspace. "After long, we have a complete album that has been so widely appreciated. People are loving Vele as much as they're loving Ishq Wala Love and The Disco Song. I won't be surprised if this breaks the clutter and does big numbers at the box office," says Thadani.
Karan Johar's Student of the Year soundtrack also includes "The Disco Song" that uses samples of the late Pakistani pop singer Nazia Hassan's "Disco Deewane" and additional vocals by Sunidhi Chauhan and Benny Dayal. "Kukkad" and "Vele" are both influenced by bhangra and include an electronic touch. The album ends with the "Mashup of the Year" track, a mix of all the songs in the album cleverly put together by DJ Kamath. In all, the Student of the Year is an assured winner and will draw in larger numbers at cinemas on the movie's release.
But I have never made films just for money. I'd never make a film which people would call a package. That would kill me," says Karan. The director has been known to spend extravagantly on his films, all of which have managed to score well at the box office.
